The Register is where the people who shape the battery industry are set on the record, in a profile, in their own words, or both.

Most entries are profiles, written from the public record and worked through with the subject. Some go further and go on the record, answering our questions in their own words. Rather than put the same questions to everyone, we keep a set for each part of the industry: you choose the area that fits you, answer between one and three, and that is the piece. A regulator and a plant director will rarely answer the same things, and that is the point.

Five steps

Find the area below that fits you best.
Choose between one and three of its questions, or write your own instead.
Answer in as much or as little space as you like. A short paragraph each is plenty.
Tell us which region you work in: US, EU, UK or Asia.
Send your answers, with a high-resolution headshot, and we do the rest.

Regulatory and PolicyFour questions +

01What one change to regulation or standards would make the biggest practical difference to the industry?

02Where is current battery regulation working well, and where is it holding the industry back?

03What do policymakers most often misunderstand about how batteries are actually made or used?

04How well aligned are the major markets, the EU, US and UK, and what does divergence cost?

Manufacturing and ProductionFour questions +

01What is the hardest part of scaling battery manufacturing that outsiders underestimate?

02What will separate the manufacturers that succeed this decade from those that don’t?

03Where is the real bottleneck in production today: equipment, skills, materials, or something else?

04What have you learned building or running a plant that you couldn’t have learned any other way?

Mining, Materials and Supply ChainFour questions +

01Which material constraint worries you most over the next ten years, and why?

02How realistic is a supply chain that doesn’t depend on any single country?

03What does the market consistently get wrong about raw material costs or availability?

04What would a genuinely resilient battery supply chain actually require?

Markets and CommercialFour questions +

01What signal do you watch that most people outside the industry overlook?

02What widely held assumption about battery costs, supply or demand do you think is wrong?

03Where is the next major commercial opportunity that the market hasn’t priced in yet?

04What separates a battery business that lasts from one that doesn’t?

Science and TechnologyFour questions +

01Which technology or chemistry is over-hyped right now, and which is underrated?

02What result or idea from your field deserves far more attention than it’s had?

03What is the hardest technical problem you’ve worked on, and what did it teach you?

04What breakthrough would change the industry most, and how close is it really?

Associations and Industry BodiesFour questions +

01What can the industry only achieve by acting collectively rather than as individual companies?

02Where does the industry most need to speak with one voice, and why doesn’t it?

03What does effective representation of this industry actually require?

04What has the industry organised well, and what has it failed to organise?

Or set your own

If what you most want to say sits outside these, write your own question and answer it. That is often the most interesting piece of all.

Two lighter ones, if you’d like: what first pulled you into batteries, and did you expect to still be here? And who in this industry taught you the most?
