Belgium's Umicore is one of the few companies that spans cathode materials and battery recycling in one, making high-performance cathode for automakers and recovering metals from spent cells at industrial scale.
Profile
Umicore is a Belgian materials-technology and recycling group, headquartered in Brussels and one of the world's leading suppliers of cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Formed in 1989 (and known as Union Minière before 2001), it has reshaped itself into a technology-focused business.
The company operates across catalysis, energy and surface technologies, and recycling. Within its battery business it produces rechargeable-battery cathode materials and cobalt and specialty materials, supplying cell makers worldwide, with a strong emphasis on responsible sourcing and closed-loop recycling of metals.
Umicore is publicly listed on Euronext Brussels and is a component of Belgium's BEL 20 index. It reported revenue of around €3.6 billion in 2025 and employs roughly 10,000 people.
