Volkswagen Group
Volkswagen is building one of the largest carmaker-owned battery operations through its PowerCo unit, which is raising gigafactories in Germany, Spain and Canada to make its unified prismatic cell.
Profile
Volkswagen Group is one of the world's largest automakers and, through its battery subsidiary PowerCo, among the most ambitious carmakers in building its own cell manufacturing. Batteries are central to its electric strategy across brands from VW to Audi and Porsche.
PowerCo has developed a standardised unified cell designed to work across most of the group's electric models and to support LFP, NMC, sodium-ion and future solid-state chemistries. The group sources cells from external suppliers and is building its own gigafactories in Europe and North America, and it backs solid-state developer QuantumScape, whose cells have passed VW durability testing.
Volkswagen's scale and its unified-cell strategy make it one of the most important forces shaping European battery manufacturing.
