Profile

SVOLT Energy Technology is a Chinese battery manufacturer that grew out of the battery business unit of Great Wall Motor, becoming an independent company in 2018. It produces lithium-ion cells for electric vehicles and energy storage.

SVOLT is best known for pioneering the volume production of cobalt-free high-nickel cathode batteries, its NMx chemistry, which removes cobalt to cut cost and improve thermal stability, alongside LFP and short-blade cell formats. Its automotive customers have included Great Wall, Geely, Stellantis, Dongfeng and Leapmotor.

The company set ambitious capacity targets and built multiple manufacturing sites in China. Like several Chinese cell makers, it has adjusted its international expansion, including scaling back planned European plants, in response to shifting EV demand and market conditions.
