Eight winners for battery recycling

The US Department of Energy has named eight winners of its Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling Prize, each awarded $200,000.

The United States Department of Energy has announced eight winners of its Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling Prize, a competition aimed at advancing new ways to recycle lithium-ion batteries and strengthen domestic supply chains.

Each of the eight teams receives $200,000 and moves forward to the next phase of the contest, where their proposals will be validated and evaluated further. The prize, run by the DOE’s Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation, is part of a broader push to reduce American reliance on imported critical materials by recovering and reusing what is already in circulation.

It is a modest sum against the scale of the task, but a useful signal: recycling is being treated, increasingly, as core supply-chain infrastructure rather than an afterthought.

From the US Department of Energy’s own announcement, reported August 2026. The Battery Ledger reports these from the public record.
