The UK opens up to £25m for battery innovation
Innovate UK
Innovate UK’s latest Battery Innovation competition is offering up to £25 million to develop the next generation of British battery technology, from cells to full packs. Applications close on 2 December.
Innovate UK, the UK’s national innovation agency, has opened Round 3 of its Battery Innovation competition, making up to £25 million available to support the development of new battery technology in Britain. Applications close on 2 December 2026.
This round is deliberately focused. It targets high-rate manufacturing and high performance across cell, module and pack development, the areas that decide whether a promising battery can actually be made at scale. There are two strands: concept development grants of £70,000 to £500,000, for shorter projects of six to eighteen months, and larger feasibility studies of £500,000 to £4 million.
It sits within the UK’s wider Battery Innovation Programme, the ecosystem built over recent years around the Faraday Institution, the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre and others, to carry battery ideas from the lab to the factory floor. A previous round awarded £21.8 million across 22 projects.
For any UK battery company, materials firm or research team with something worth developing, it is a real and substantial funding opportunity. Worth marking, and worth acting on before the December deadline.
